Josef Hoffmann (1870 - 1956)

Josef Hoffmann   was an Austrian architect and designer. He designed furniture, fabrics, silver and metal objects, jewelry, glass and ceramics. His work is characterized by the purity of lines and geometric forms. In his work, the architect was based primarily on functionalism. In 1903, he became a co-founder of the Wiener Werksatte (Vienna Workshops), a group of artists who dealt with modern design. They were inspired by British workshops producing used objects at the highest aesthetic and craft level. The first major project Hoffmann worked on was the Hohe Warte villa colony in Vienna. Hoffmann also collaborated with the Viennese-Vsetín company Jacob & Josef Kohn, which produces furniture from bent beech wood.
