Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969)

Originally from northern Germany, he studied with architect Petr Behrens. Initially he held expressive forms, in 1929 he created a German pavilion at the World's Fair in Barcelona. In his spirit, he built the Tugendhat villa in Brno a year later. He was a visiting professor at the Bauhaus, where during his tenure he designed the "Barcelona" chair and, together with M. Stam, the "Freischwinger" chair. From 1930 to 1933, after the forced departure of W. Gropius, he became director of the Bauhaus. In 1935 he emigrated to the United States before the Nazis.
